The gaming industry is alive and well in southern Nevada. Mesquite might seem like a sleepy rural town from the inside, but it’s got real glitz and glamour on the outside. Don’t feel like you have to dress up. People come here to kick back and relax. We like to think of it as a resort community (because it is).
Visit Mesquite with caution. People have been known to fall in love here - with the town, and the people. The setting for this fun border town is the Virgin Valley, a part of the great Mohave Desert.
Coming from Las Vegas? You can get here in about an hour. The city is located on the Nevada/Arizona border and it’s approximately 35 miles south of St. George, Utah.
Here you will experience:
- breath-taking views
- resorts
- golf courses (7 of them)
- close proximity to national and state parks
- live entertainment
- 24-hour casinos
- many dining options
- sporting events for the whole family
Mesquite is a great place to stay with family because rooms are often available at local casinos for under $30 per night!

A peek back at gaming in Mesquite
The city of Mesquite did not incorporate until 1984, but the gaming industry arrived here years before. The Oasis Hotel and Casino was built in 1976, according to a Wikipedia article published online. The now-defunct gambling operation came into being when William Redd opened it on 26 acres at 897 West Mesquite Boulevard. The hotel and casino are said to have helped diversify Mesquite’s economy. The establishment was clearly visible to those traveling on Interstate-15 and that was key. It was originally known as the Peppermill Resort. Later it was renamed “Si Redd’s Oasis.” It was the only game in town until 1990.
The real estate on which the Oasis was built was originally a Western Village Truck Stop. It offered 28 hotel rooms and 23 slot machines.
In 2001 Redd sold the establishment to Randy Black Sr. and Black Gaming. Some parts of the casino were closed in December 2008. Financial problems seemed to overtake it. It closed completely in 2010. From time to time it was used for overflow when other Black Gaming and other Mesquite casinos became full. The building was demolished in 2013.
Redd (nickname “Si”) founded the slot machine company called International Game Technology.

Black Gaming takes over the town
Black Gaming made a commitment to Mesquite and when the resort was originally known as Players Island (owned by Players International) came up for sale, Black jumped. Players Island opened in 1995. The Casa Blanca was born. It featured a hotel, casino and even a park for recreational vehicles. Players International’s venture wasn’t performing so well and Black swooped in to save the day. He opened it and unveiled the new name in July 1997. It remains Casablanca Resort, Casino, Golf and Spa today and is located at 950 W Mesquite Blvd.
Casablanca Resort brought uptown to Mesquite’s downtown. Today it remains the property of Black Gaming. It offers:
